John the Faster

John the Faster
(d. 595)
   Patriarch.
As John IV, John the Faster served as Patriarch of Constantinople from 582. His cognomen derives from his austere ascetic practices. He is remembered for assuming the title ‘Ecumenical (universal) Patriarch’ in 588 which, despite the protests of Pope Pelagius II and, later, Gregory the great, was handed down to his successors. Thus John not only established the supremacy of Constantinople over the other Eastern sees, he gave it a claim to be of at least equal standing with Rome. John is also the attributed author of a Penitential, but it was in fact written long after his death.
